SOAP – Word of the Day

SOAP – Word of the Day

Not just to use in the bath!  S.O.A.P. can be used with any daily Bible reading plan. It is a newer, simple method of Bible reading and journaling.  It is a process I have been using for about 6 months now and I really have enjoyed how my reading time has been enriched.

We first learned of it in a small group called OSL-Operation Solid Lives, a study for building disciples.  I now use with our monthly all church study and for my daily reading.  It is a great tool to build communication, staying connected with God.

You can use a journal book or a note page like shown in the blog, which ever works best for you.  Write the date, book, chapter and verse at the top and then use the letters S.O.A.P. before each writing.

S for Scripture
Open your Bible in today’s reading allow God to speak to you.  Which verse was meaningful or jumped out to you? Write it down.

O for Observation
What about the verse caught your attention?  What is God saying to you in this passage?  Write down what you learned.

A for Application
Ask yourself how it applies to your life, make it personal.  Is it instructional, an encouragement, a new promise, or corrections for a particular area of your life?

P for Prayer
Write out a prayer to the Lord.  Ask Him to help you remember and to use your new life application. Remember, prayer is a two-way conversation, so be sure to listen to what God has to say too!

Be cautious if you are a new Christian of deciphering the Bible yourself or getting trapped in the “if it feels good, it must be for me moment”.  Below are a few dangers I can see people falling into with the SOAP Bible study method:

  • Interpreting without knowledge of the Bible
  • Interpreting out of context
  • Interpreting mystically or emotionally received

The SOAP Bible study technique is more likely to result in solid Biblical understanding and application. You can make it a simple and short method or more lengthy writing.  Use it wisely, with open communication with God and He will fulfill your understanding.  Enjoy enriching your time with God.
