Discernment – Practicing Good Judgment
A simple definition for discernment is the ability to decide between truth/ False and right/wrong in the world and in our Faith. It also means-
- The ability to judge well.
- The quality of being able to grasp and to comprehend what is obscure.
- The act or process of exhibiting keen insight and good judgment of truth in all areas of life.
Discerning
One of the first things the Holy Spirit gave me when I started this blog was the word discern. I studied the meaning and read up on scripture about discernment. In my writings I practice discernment by using my Bible, concordance, commentaries, prayer and cross reference scripture to find truth. Most importantly, we must to ask God, Jesus or the Holy Spirit for discernment in understanding scripture or discerning truth from falsehood.
— Christian’s must hold fast to the discernment God has provided us in His truth. Without discernment we are at risk of being “tossed here and there by waves, and carried about by every wind of doctrine” as in Ephesians 4:14.
Learning good discernment takes time, patience and practice, it comes as you mature. It is also known that to discern God’s voice is an internal radar, if it brings peace and aligns with His word, it is most likely truth. Don’t be afraid to test scripture. In fact we are told to as in 1Thessalonians 5:21-22.
Remember how teachers always stress the who, what, when, where and why in finding out fact and truth. Well the same can be said with the Bible. It is not always just about the quantity of the Word we read but about how we discern and grow in knowledge.
Lord Jesus, I pray that you will always reveal your truth to me. I trust you will protect me and others from false teaching as long as we are listening. Thank you Jesus
