Deborah’s Story
Deborah was a woman of great political power, counselor to her people, a judge and a homemaker. She must have had fire in her eyes, determination in her step and a positive ring in her her voice. Unlike Moses and Gideon she rose to the call without hesitation or stipulation, rising up against fear leading Israel into victory. She was known for showing faith and action.
Battle with Sisera
After receiving direction from God Deborah met with Barak gathering 10,000 troops up Mount Tabor to attack Sisera, commander of Jabin’s troops. Barak responded, asking her to join him in battle in Judges 4:8. Some say he wished to keep her close to give him new direction she receives, she also prophesied the honor of the victory will be at the hands of a woman. After the battle with Sisera in Judges 5, you will find a very popular poem known as “the Song of Deborah”.
A Judge and a Prophet
She judged the land while sitting under a palm tree, a Jewish tradition which also showed her openness and refusal to show favoritism, reigning for 60 years. As a prophet, Deborah was known to hear God’s voice and share God’s Word with her people. As a priestess, she didn’t offer sacrifices but lead worship services and preached.
Three things we learn from Deborah are to: be obedient, be courageous and stand true in your faith.
Besides Deborah, Samuel was the only other person in the Bible told to be both prophet and judge and she is the only female judge mentioned in the Bible. Her story left me wanting more, I think she was fascinating…
Thank you God for providing wonderful role models of confident and victorious women for us. Your word is full and complete.
